Guideposts

Core priorities guiding regional conservation and recreation efforts

Guideposts are the core areas of focus that shape and organize the Roaring Fork Outdoor Coalition's work. Developed through community listening sessions and refined during a regional symposium, the guideposts reflect shared priorities, key challenges, and opportunities across the Roaring Fork Watershed.

The guideposts represent a common framework to:

  • Align partners across jurisdictions
  • Frame regional conversations and decision-making
  • Identify priorities, actions, and measures of success
  • Guide both near-term initiatives and long-term strategy

The guideposts acknowledge that conservation and recreation in the watershed are complex and interconnected.

The guideposts of the Roaring Fork Outdoor Coalition are:

  • Cross-Jurisdictional Partnerships
  • Conservation, Habitat, and Connectivity
  • Education and Stewardship
  • Access and Equity
  • Recreation Volume and Impacts

Developing the Guideposts

The five guideposts were developed through facilitated conversations with over 55 community collaborators from area non-profits and organizations, in addition to engagement with 1,212 residents and visitors.

Conservation and Recreation Data

Findings from the Roaring Fork Watershed Biodiversity and Connectivity Study (2022) and the Visitor Use and Experience Assessment (2024) established the foundation for conserving biodiversity in the watershed and maintaining the desired recreational experience.

Community Voice

A series of 10 listening sessions and 6 interviews took place in August 2023 to understand the diverse perspectives and experiences of organizations and community members regarding recreation and conservation.

  • 11 sessions
  • 200 subject-matter experts invited
  • 120 participants
  • 6 1:1 interviews
  • 55 organizations represented

A symposium brought together interested and affected collaborators throughout the watershed to build on the findings of the listening sessions. The objective of the day was to collectively define priorities for the Roaring Fork Outdoor Coalition to focus on in the forthcoming recreation and conservation plan.

  • Approximately 78 participants
  • Approximately 55 organizations represented
